Samyama explains the disciplines necessary both to live in the natural grace of yoga, and to accrue supernatural powers, or siddhis”

B.K.S Iyengar

In the third Pada of the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali speaks about the art and discipline of Yogic integration. This takes place through the dedicated practice of the meditative trinity of concentration (dharana), meditation (dhyana) and meditative absorption (samadhi). In contrast to the outer limbs of the Eightfold path, these comprise the inner limbs of the eightfold path.

For the seasoned practitioner of Yoga, antaranga sadhana (the inner limbs of practice) comprise a true gem of Yoga guiding us on towards the Sacred realm within.

In studying the intricate and mystical process of meditation laid out in the sutras of Vibhuti Pada we receive a valuable map to guide our sadhana of daily sitting. This aspect of “sitting with ourselves” is crucial for the unfoldment of sattvic intuition (prajna) and sacred Alignment. Only when truly resting in our-Selves can we attune to the inner dimensions of the sacred and Divine.

When we deepen our practice according to the map given by Sage Patanjali, extraordinary abilities and attainments incidentally unfold. These siddhis are to be treated with humble understanding and detachment in order to not create unnecessary attachment and affliction in mind and heart. Essentially, these are considered signposts of successful practice, and yet not

the ultimate goal of inner freedom (kaivalya).

In this year’s Advanced Philosophy Immersion Program we will begin our study of the 3 book of Patanjali, and integrate our studies with Iyengar Yoga Sadhana as well as relevant Contemplative Practice.

Prerequisite: participants must have completed the 4 module Patanjali course in order to register for this course.
